The use of cannabis and hallucinogens among younger and middle-age adults in the US stayed at historically high levels in 2023, according to a survey conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan since 1975. About 2 in 5 adults ages 19 to 30 reported using cannabis in the past year, with 10% of that group using it nearly every day. More women in the 19 to 30 age group reported cannabis use than men, while men had a higher prevalence of cannabis use in the older age group. Cannabis vaping slightly increased among younger adults. The use of hallucinogens remained consistent compared to the previous year. Alcohol was still the most-used substance among adults. Drug overdose deaths decreased in 2023. The survey provides long-term trends and will continue to examine substance use among different age groups in the coming years.
